Olympic figure skating champion Katarina Witt called the sudden opening of the Berlin Wall and other recent events in her native East Germany “amazing.”

“I mean, I couldn’t believe it when I heard it,” Witt told ABC Sports in an interview aired at halftime of its College Football Scorebard show. “Actually, I wasn’t home for the last two weeks, and I wish I would be there now. I called to my parents and they say the mood is amazing at home and everybody is traveling to West Germany to see something.”

Witt, who was in Seville, Spain, where she is filming a show “Carmen On Ice,” won the women’s figure skating title at the 1988 Calgary Olympics. Since then, she has been touring the world with a professional ice show.
