Euterpe Dukakis, mother of Gov. Michael S. Dukakis, was released Sunday from Beth Israel Hospital, where she received a pacemaker, a spokesman for the hospital said.

Mrs. Dukakis, 86, was admitted to the hospital last Monday after suffering fainting spells. The pacemaker was implanted Friday.

The governor’s wife, Kitty Dukakis, remained hospitalized Sunday at Brigham and Womens’ Hospital.

She was hospitalized after experiencing a “severe reaction” to drinking rubbing alcohol last Monday night while in a state of exhaustion with flu symptoms and depression, her doctor said.

Earlier this year, the governor’s wife underwent four weeks of treatment for alcoholism. She has previously admitted that she was addicted to diet pills for 26 years.
