P. M. Briefing : Times Man Dennis Britton to Be Editor of Chicago Sun-Times
Dennis A. Britton, deputy managing editor of the Los Angeles Times, was named editor of the Chicago Sun-Times today.
Britton, 49, succeeds Kenneth D. Towers, who was moved to another management position earlier this year.
Britton will be responsible for developing new approaches at the Sun-Times, a tabloid and the Windy City’s second-largest newspaper behind the Chicago Tribune, the newspaper said in a statement.
Britton was the Los Angeles Times’ deputy managing editor in charge of national, foreign, business and economic coverage for the last six years.
Britton, a fifth-generation Californian born in Santa Barbara, joined The Times as a copy editor in 1966 after four years at the San Jose Mercury News. At The Times he was Washington bureau news editor and assistant chief of bureau from 1972 to ’77 and national editor from 1977 to ’83.
Britton, who is a graduate of San Jose State University, is married to the former Theresa Romero and has three children.
