MISSION VIEJO : New Group to Offer Services for Elderly

Share

A new Mission Viejo community service group for the elderly will be introduced today by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

The Senior Community Activity Team will focus on providing the smaller, yet important, services that sometimes fall short of the city budget, said Sheriff’s Lt. George Johnson.

The senior volunteers will aid the community by making regular checks on shut-ins, watching homes while the owners are on vacation and monitoring handicapped parking spots for violations. In addition, the group will report graffiti and hazards to city workers and run Mission Viejo’s bicycle registration program, Johnson said.

“It’s marvelous that these senior citizens will volunteer their services to help the community they live in,” Johnson said. “These kinds of programs make it possible to provide services that would be otherwise lacking because of a lack of money.”

City and county officials, as well as local businesses, have lined up behind the group. One merchant has donated a vehicle for the team’s use, with the city lending office space and the Sheriff’s Department providing training to volunteers.

The program will be run by the city of Mission Viejo and the Sheriff’s Department.
