From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Montana hunters may kill as many as 200 bison this winter if they stray from northern Yellowstone National Park, the state’s wildlife director said. Park officials try to keep the northern herd below 300 animals, but it has surged well above that, and there is no known way to prevent the animals from wandering out of the park. Montana ranchers complain the bison damage property and spread disease to cattle, and state law permits killing them in supervised hunts.
