WORLD : Police Halt Czechoslovak March
Riot police broke up a pro-democracy demonstration by tens of thousands of people in the Czechoslovak capital today, beating many of them with batons and detaining others.
The demonstrators had rallied at the medical faculty building of Charles University to mark the 50th anniversary of the suppression of student protests against the occupation of Czechoslovakia by Nazi Germany.
After allowing the demonstrators to start off down an officially approved march route south of the city’s center, police began beating back others who sought to enter the heart of the capital.
