Time magazine was ordered by a court today to pay $2,100 in damages to a Japanese doctor who said the magazine misquoted her six years ago.

Judge Eiko Ito of Tokyo District Court ruled that the magazine had damaged the reputation of Dr. Etsuko Negishi.

In its Aug. 1, 1983, issue, the magazine said, “Two out of three Japanese women have had an abortion, which is so common, ‘it is like having a tooth out,’ says Dr. Etsuko Negishi, a woman gynecologist.”

Negishi said she never made such a comment to Time.

“I have never met a Time reporter, nor have I ever made such a comment before,” she said.

Time defended its action by saying the doctor was quoted by Japanese newspapers, and the magazine took the quote from them.
