A Spring Valley computer consultant who defrauded the San Diego Unified Port District by billing for services not rendered was sentenced Thursday to 90 days in jail and ordered to pay $9,299 in restitution.

Ronald Barry Lewis, 45, who operates a business under the name of ATC Specialties, was taken into custody after the sentencing.

San Diego Municipal Court Judge Frederick Link also ordered another 90 days to be spent in a work furlough project. Lewis pleaded guilty Sept. 11 to two counts of grand theft just as his preliminary hearing before Link was to start.

Link said he considered Lewis’ early admission of wrongdoing as a factor in not imposing a state prison sentence.

“I’m considering the hundreds of thousands of dollars he has saved the county,” said Link, referring to the cost of a trial.

Lewis is the seventh co-defendant to be sentenced or charged in the purchasing-irregularities scandal that began unraveling in 1987.
