IRVINE : Teen Alcohol Habits Examined in Forum
About 50 Irvine residents attended a town meeting this week as part of an extensive project to gauge community standards regarding the drinking habits of young adults.
“The point of this particular forum is to give the community the opportunity to decide whether the present standards for teen-age drinking reflect their values,” said Marsha Burgess, Irvine community services superintendent.
Burgess said forum participants, mostly high school students, would provide knowledge on how the city should handle teen-agers and alcohol.
That knowledge, along with data from earlier studies, will be presented to the City Council at its Feb. 20 meeting.
“We’re not looking at whether your grandfather was an alcoholic or whether your parents permitted you to drink,” Burgess said. Instead, she added, it is important to learn how parents and teen-agers feel about drinking.
“What really matters is that you will have as much to say in this project as the fire chief or the people in the trauma center,” she said.
