China Acts to Thwart Dissident Fax Moves
Authorities have tightened security around telephone facsimile machines in the Chinese capital to thwart a campaign by a Paris-based dissident group to use the equipment to flood China with anti-government propaganda.
The Front for Democratic China, a Paris-based exile group, launched what it called a “faxing freedom” campaign last month to dispute the official version of the crushing of a pro-democracy movement in June.
The semiofficial China News Service said Friday that Beijing offices will be required to tighten curbs on access to telefax machines.
