A federal mediator said Friday that he has called the Boeing Co. and the union representing 57,800 striking machinists back to the bargaining table in another attempt to end the longest walkout ever against the world’s largest airplane manufacturer.

Mediator Doug Hammond said he scheduled a session beginning this afternoon. The strike by members of the International Assn. of Machinists and Aerospace Workers entered its 45th day Friday, tying the record set by the last strike against Boeing in 1977.
