Judge Says Glendale Need Not Pay Fines
A Los Angeles Superior Court judge reaffirmed this week that the city of Glendale does not have to pay stiff fines for violating conditions imposed by a state agency on the city’s Scholl Canyon landfill.
The city argued that it lacked the equipment needed to meet conditions imposed by the South Coast Air Quality Management District for burning off methane gas leaking from a closed portion of the landfill.
The ruling by Judge Miriam A. Vogel made permanent a restraining order issued in July prohibiting the AQMD from fining the city up to $50,000 a day for failing to comply with the order.
The city is in the process of installing a new gas collection system, to be completed in December, that will meet the air quality rules.
