Council Rejects Sole Bid for Park Improvement

The Glendale City Council on Tuesday rejected the only bid to renovate facilities at Brand Park after it came in nearly 50% higher than city’s appropriation for the job.

The council decided to reopen the bidding after staff members have a chance to make changes in the construction plans.

Nello Iacono, director of the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department, said his staff had proposed four changes for the park at 1601 West Mountain St.: replacing the outdated irrigation system, renovating and adding a restroom to the ball field area, redesigning the Grandview entrance to the park and replacing the road next to the library and art center with a courtyard.

The council had appropriated $644,000 for the project in 1986 and had opened it for bidding a month and a half ago, Iacono said. Two weeks ago, M.S. Construction and Electrical Contractors of Van Nuys bid to do the job for $907,585.
