Residents Warned After Rabid Bat Is Discovered

Share

A Mexican Freetail bat recently discovered by two boys in Long Beach has tested positive for rabies, but health officials say the chance of transmitting the disease to human beings or pets is “very minimal.”

The bat was discovered lying in grass in the 3600 block of Ladoga Avenue on Nov. 11 by the boys, who contacted animal control officers. Tests on the animal, done both locally and by the state, proved positive.

Notices advising residents to confine their pets were posted around the Long Beach neighborhood where the bat was found. Although the risk is considered slight, animal control officers urged anyone who suspects they have come in contact with a bat to call (213) 595-5449. Mexican Freetail bats are common in Los Angeles County.
