Eighth Child Dies as Result of Tornado
An eighth child died as a result of the tornado that smashed a wall of glass and masonry into the cafeteria of East Coldenham Elementary School near Newburgh, N.Y., on Nov. 16.
Eight-year-old Jennifer Homan died at the Albany Medical Center Hospital, a hospital spokesman said. He described the cause of death as “brain death secondary to multiple trauma.”
Gov. Mario M. Cuomo ordered an investigation into the disaster. The state will secure building records and debris from the cafeteria wall to determine if structural flaws contributed to the eight deaths, he said.
Seventeen students were injured.
