Support Turns Up for Nancy Reagan

Share

This letter is regarding the article “Nancy’s Detractors Take Another Turn” (View, Nov. 16). I believe that the media have always been unfair to Nancy Reagan from the very first day she arrived in Washington. I remember female TV news correspondents at President Reagan’s first inauguration stating how stylishly and beautifully Nancy Reagan was dressed, but wondering aloud whether she was going to be a First Lady of any “substance.” They stated that she had yet to decide upon a “serious project.”

When I watched the coverage of Bush’s inaugural festivities, I heard none of this skepticism or implied criticism of Barbara Bush.

I doubt if Nancy Reagan is disliked as much as the media would have us believe. I have always liked Nancy, and I admire her for being a strong, caring, thoughtful person who has always tried to do her best. As First Lady, she worked hard to serve her husband and her country well, and she did a first-class job. A weaker person would have caved in under the barrage of undeserved criticism to which she was subjected.

Perhaps because she has such style and looks better than many women her age or half her age, people have jealously torn her to pieces and always put her on the defensive. I have yet to read Nancy’s latest book, but it sounds to me as if people are attacking her for just being honest and forthright about her perspective on things.
