OUTDOORS : Striped Bass Are Striking

Striped bass have come alive after a recent trout plant at Lake Silverwood, with the bigger fish most active in the channel and near the spillway.

The father-and-son team of Jim and Andy Concannon were tops at the San Bernardino County reservoir over the weekend with respective stripers at 25 and 22 pounds.

LAKE MEAD--Striped bass coming mostly from lower basin on live shad, minnows or frozen anchovies at 15-45 feet. Largemouth bass most active off points in Temple Bar area. Artificials best bet. Catfish slow.

LAKE HAVASU--Stripers slow on surface, fair at 40 feet. Anchovies best bet. Largemouth bass slow, best off points and in coves. Catfish fair.

BULLHEAD CITY--Several limits of trout taken from river, most on Berkley Power Bait. Striped bass active in lake, averaging between three and nine pounds, biting on medium-running lures. Catfish slow.

SALTON SEA--Orangemouth corvina slow, best at State Park headquarters and Red Hill. Sargo biting mainly along north shoreline, best off jetties. Wes Keat, Indio, 14 1/4-ounce sargo, caught on fly rod. Croaker bite steady at Bombay Beach. Tilapia active at Johnson Road. All-American Canal yielding good numbers of channel catfish, taken primarily with chicken liver or mackerel.

LAKE CACHUMA--Two recent trout plants. Most limits coming mostly on Power Bait or inflated nightcrawlers. Largemouth bass slow. Jigging off drop offs at 35 feet best bet. Hours change Monday to 7 a.m.-5 p.m.

LAKE CASITAS--Trollers using lead-core line at seven colors and needlefish lures catching limits of trout primarily along east side of main island. Bait fishermen doing best at Wadleigh Arm using cheese or nightcrawlers. Largemouth bass and catfish slow.

LAKE PIRU--Trout providing most action. Trollers fishing the shallows with green or red lures catching the most limits. Largemouth bass averaging 1 1/2-pounds biting mainly along rocky ledges and off points. Catfish fair, biting near dam at about 40 feet. Mackerel best bet.

LAKE CASTAIC--Some limits of trout coming from upper lake. Power Bait best bet. Largemouth bass and catfish slow.

IRVINE LAKE--Trout the primary attraction, biting best in Sierra Cove. Pat O’Brien, Garden Grove, 9 1/2-pound trout. Several limits of smaller fish. Some largemouth bass and catfish being caught, mainly at Red Cliffs and Sierra Cove.

PERRIS LAKE--Bluegills active near inlet, averaging a half-pound, 20-30 fish stringers common. Jim Mitchell, Claremont, 25 bluegills. Largemouth and spotted bass fair, biting on mudsuckers and nightcrawlers near dam at about 35 feet. Catfish and trout slow.

LAKE SKINNER--Catfish most active near dam in deep water. Rosali Damicog, Garden Grove, 13-pound catfish. Largemouth bass fair. Derek Dagarin, Garden Grove, 3-4 bass. Crappie scattered, most coming from dam. Harry Frisby, Buena Park, 2 1/4-pound crappie.

BIG BEAR--Small crowds, good trout fishing. Trollers catching limits throughout lake. Bait fishermen using Power Bait and small lures catching some limits of pan-sized trout, mainly near dam and along north and east shorelines.

LAKE SILVERWOOD--Striped bass active near spillway and in channel, biting on anchovies and surface lures. Mike Knapp, San Marcos, 18 1/2- and 19-pound striper. Jim Concannon, Apple Valley, 25-pound striper, Son Andy, Nevada, 22-pound striper. Jason Peters, Ramona, 19-pound striper. Stan Hendricks, San Diego, 19-pound striper and 7-pound largemouth. Largemouth bass fair in channel along rocky shoreline. Catfish slow. Crappie bite good in morning in marina.
