From Times wire services

Kitty Dukakis made her first public speaking appearance since being treated for drinking rubbing alcohol and received two standing ovations but did not mention her hospitalization.

Dukakis, wife of Massachusetts Gov. Michael S. Dukakis, spoke Wednesday night to about 120 people at the New England Holocaust Memorial Committee dinner to start the fund-raising campaign for the memorial’s design competition. She received standing ovations before and after her five-minute speech in which she said: “Each of us matters. Each of us is responsible for the other. And each of us has the capacity to fight injustice and make a difference in others’ lives.”

Reporters were asked not to question her about her recent hospitalization, but she responded: “All right, thanks,” when asked how she was feeling.
