President Bush, on the eve of World AIDS Day, said the best way to fight the spread of “this terrible disease” is through education. He also expressed compassion for victims of the deadly virus, spread through sex or shared needles with an infected partner. The White House issued the remarks before Bush left for Malta and his summit with Soviet President Mikhail S. Gorbachev. The World Health Organization has designated today as World AIDS Day. A federal official said more than 112,000 cases of acquired immune deficiency syndrome have been reported in the United States.
