Pipe Bomb Found During Search for Narcotics
Sheriff’s deputies serving a search warrant in a narcotics investigation stumbled unexpectedly onto a lethal pipe bomb in a suspect’s apartment in Norwalk Friday, investigators said.
“We were just going about the business . . . of searching the location when one of the deputies found a cardboard box . . . marked ‘Fragile, Handle With Care,’ ” said Sheriff’s Sgt. Glen Bartholomew, head of the narcotics team. The suspect, Charles Spooner, 26, eventually admitted that explosives were in the box.
Deputies evacuated nearby apartments in the complex at 11544 Imperial Highway and bomb squad members disarmed the device.
Spooner was booked on suspicion of possession of an explosive device, manufacture of an explosive device and possession of methamphetamines for sale. Bail was set at $60,000.
