California IN BRIEF : FRESNO : Clerk Accused of Stealing IRS Checks

A mail clerk at the Internal Revenue Service regional processing center in Fresno has been indicted on seven counts of stealing checks people mailed with their federal income tax returns, officials reported Friday. Elwood Larkin White, 43, was accused of embezzling checks ranging from $200 to $4,062 from the IRS service center between December, 1988, and February this year. The seven checks totaled $7,708. White could be sentenced to as much as 70 years in prison and be fined $70,000.
