A 35-year-old San Diego man apparently ran out of air while scuba diving Saturday morning in the Pacific Ocean and died, U.S. Coast Guard officers and coroner’s deputies said.

Gary Charles Canedy had been diving with two friends about three miles north of Coronado Island when he became separated from the other two at a depth of 90 feet, the Coast Guard reported.

Canedy surfaced about 10:10 a.m., and companions aboard the nearby dive boat called for help while they began trying to resuscitate him, the Coast Guard said.

A Coast Guard helicopter lifted Canedy to UC San Diego Medical Center, but he was declared dead there at 11:23 a.m., coroner’s deputies said.
