Reported cases of AIDS worldwide increased by 11,362, or 6.1%, in November to 198,165, the World Health Organization said Friday.

Monthly increases usually are between 2% and 3%. Officials attributed the sharp rise in November to Zaire’s sudden admission that it has a large number of AIDS cases.

Zaire had last reported its AIDS cases on June 30, 1987, when it said it had only 335 of them. Its latest estimate is 4,636 reported cases, officials said.

The United States reported an increase of 3,025 cases for a total of 110,333. That is 55.7% of the world total.

The health organization estimated the true global total to be at least double and possibly triple the number of reported cases because reports from African and Latin American countries are often a year or more out of date and far from complete.
