Supersonic Engine Pact: Four companies from the United States, Britain and France will join three Japanese firms in a $195.8-million project to develop a supersonic aircraft engine, a Japanese official said. The eight-year project, to be financed entirely by the Japanese government, involves research and development of a prototype supersonic engine to drive airplanes at five times the speed of sound, said Masaru Takamatsu of the Ministry of International Trade and Industry. “It is estimated that another 10 years will be needed for the development of an engine for practical use,” Takamatsu said.
