Sheldon--’Free Agent for God’
Bishop Leo T. Maher and the Rev. Sheldon have both made news in the pages of The Times recently. The news indicates these two men represent a threat to democracy and freedom of religion far beyond their respective battles against abortion and evolution.
Not satisfied to preach in front of their own congregations, Maher and Sheldon are attempting to foist their religious beliefs on the rest of us through civil laws. While Maher uses religious extortion against an elected official, Sheldon lobbies in Sacramento.
The danger is not merely that abortion and evolution might someday be banned. The danger is that other religions might follow the examples of Maher and Sheldon and attempt to have their beliefs legislated upon the rest of us without regard for how those beliefs conflict with our own religion.
