“GRATEFUL DEAD FAMILY ALBUM,” by Jerilyn Lee Brandelius. Warner Books. $29.95
The 23-year “long strange trip” of the Grateful Dead and its Deadhead following has been the subject of numerous accounts, ranging from quasi-mystical fawnings to serious sociological studies. But this volume--essentially an extensive scrapbook of candid snapshots, insider memories and press clips--may be the best glimpse behind the scenes with the San Francisco institution. Photographer Brandelius, a long-time Dead associate, has provided a book both fun and insightful, valuable to fans and sociologists alike. One of many highlights: an early-’70s primer on how to get a job with the Dead. Hanging around seemed to be the top qualification.
