California IN BRIEF : ONTARIO : Engine Explodes; Plane Lands Safely
From Times staff and wire reports
An airliner with 43 people aboard made a safe landing at Ontario International Airport after one of its two engines blew up, authorities said. The plane, a Trans World Airlines MD-80, had just taken off from Palm Springs Airport when the pilot reported hearing a pop in one of the engines, the Federal Aviation Administration reported. The pilot decided to continue the 15-minute flight to Ontario, which has a longer runway than Palm Springs, said Capt. Richard Mann of the Ontario airport’s police and fire services.
