Mark Breland successfully defended his World Boxing Assn. welterweight title in Tokyo against Japan’s Fujio Ozaki when referee Julio Cesar Alvarado stopped the scheduled 12-round bout at 35 seconds of the fourth round as blood poured from a cut over Ozaki’s right eye, where he had been steadily hit by Breland.
All three judges had Breland, a 1984 Olympic gold medalist from Brooklyn, N.Y., leading, 30-27, after three rounds.
