A survey indicates that the nation’s most popular celebrity is actor Mel Gibson and the least liked is actor-director-writer Woody Allen, Spy magazine claims.

It said 450 randomly selected respondents around the nation were surveyed by telephone for Spy’s one-hour television special, “How to Be Famous,” scheduled early next year on NBC.

The magazine said the best-liked celebrities after Gibson were Tom Selleck, Bob Hope, Paul Newman, Eddie Murphy, John Wayne, Lucille Ball tied with Bill Cosby and Dolly Parton, and Clint Eastwood.

But it claims Parton also showed on the least-liked list.

Those celebrities, after Allen, were Jane Fonda, Pee-Wee Herman, Don Rickles tied with Joan Rivers, Zsa Zsa Gabor tied with Parton and Arnold Schwarzenegger, Johnny Carson and Roseanne Barr tied with Madonna.
