U.S. Memories May Extend Deadline: The proposed manufacturing consortium, which hopes to reduce U.S. dependence on Japanese suppliers by making key memory semiconductors in the United States, may continue soliciting members past its original Dec. 31 deadline, President Sanford Kane revealed. Kane said he now believes that the venture can start with just $300 million initial capital, rather than the $500 million he said was needed when plans were announced in June. So far, the consortium has raised about $170 million from its original seven members.
