63 Arrested in Protest of U.S. Role in El Salvador
Police arrested 63 protesters, including actor Ed Asner, Wednesday as they blocked doors to the Federal Building in downtown Los Angeles to protest U.S. policy in El Salvador.
It was the fourth Wednesday in a row that celebrities, clergy and activists had protested at the building.
The demonstrators have protested America’s support of the rightist government of Salvadoran President Alfredo Cristiani. During the past month, Cristiani’s government has faced several attacks from leftist rebels.
About 100 demonstrators showed up at the latest protest. The Rev. Greg Boyle, a Jesuit priest and a protest organizer, said the group will return next week.
