Edward J. Bloustein, 64, president of Rutgers University since 1971. A lawyer, philosopher and educator, Bloustein was born in New York City and taught philosophy at Brooklyn College and Cornell University before working as a political analyst for the State Department. He also worked as a law clerk for Stanely H. Fuld, chief judge of the Court of Appeals of New York, from 1959 to 1961, and taught at New York University from 1961 to 1965. Before coming to Rutgers, Bloustein was president of Bennington College in Vermont from 1965 to 1971. At Rutgers, he was considered a strong proponent of academic freedom who oversaw expansion of the state university into several areas of academic research. In Nassau, Bahamas, where he was attending a meeting Saturday, of an apparent heart attack.
