WORLD IN BRIEF : SRI LANKA : 1,000 Reportedly Killed Each Month

Government-backed forces and rebels in Sri Lanka have killed more than 1,000 people a month since the government reimposed a state of emergency in June, Amnesty International reported. The human rights organization said security forces and paramilitary groups trying to quell ethnic violence have killed hundreds of unarmed rebel suspects at random. Tamil separatists also have slain hundreds of people, the report said.
