Australian teen-age swimmer Glen Housman became the second man to break the 15-minute mark in the 1,500-meter freestyle, but he lost a chance to set a world record because an automatic timer failed.

Housman, 18, bettered the long-standing record during the Commonwealth Games trials at Adelaide, Australia, but the automatic timing system did not register his finishing touch, invalidating his time. Hand-held stopwatches clocked him in 14 minutes 53.59 seconds, 1.17 seconds faster than the record set by Vladimir Salnikov of the Soviet Union at Moscow in 1983.
