Santa Monica : Building Moratorium OKd
The City Council extended an emergency moratorium on residential development in a northwest section of the city after council members expressed concern that the area was being overdeveloped.
Such high density development has mushroomed during the last two years and “could pose a threat to the existing character of the neighborhood,” a city staff report said.
The area is bounded by Ocean Avenue on the west, 14th Street on the east, Wilshire Boulevard on the south and Montana Avenue on the north.
According to the report, there are about 40 family units per acre in the area, when 35 units per acre is considered the desirable density for such a neighborhood. During the moratorium, the council may consider permanently limiting high-density development in the area by changing zoning regulations.
