Street, Park Tax on April Ballot

Palos Verdes Estates voters will be asked April 10 to approve a ballot measure that would continue a special tax to pay for maintaining parks and streets.
The City Council on Tuesday approved the ballot measure to renew the tax, which voters have approved by a two-thirds margin several times since 1980.
If voters agree again, Palos Verdes Estates residents will pay $88 per residential unit during 1990-91. The tax, which assesses condominium and apartment dwellers at the same rate as homeowners, will increase 5% per year during the four years.
The last tax was approved for a four-year period in 1986, when voters agreed to pay $74 per residential unit with a 4% increase each year. This year the tax was $84 per dwelling.
The tax covers 60% of the cost of maintaining streets and parklands, with the balance coming from the city’s General Fund, said City Treasurer Bill Yeomans.
