From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Sporadic fighting continued in Batticaloa in eastern Sri Lanka, where Tiger rebels routed the Indian-recruited Tamil National Army, killing more than 250 militiamen, witnesses and officials said. Rebels of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam conducted house-to-house searches for fleeing fighters and the death toll continued to mount. Indian troops, in Sri Lanka as a peacekeeping force, had recruited fighters to leave in control of Tamil areas as the Indians depart. But these forces were routed by superior Tamil Tigers.
