Catholic Church and Politics

It should not be surprising that the predominately conservative Republican voters of the 39th District elected Assemblywoman Lucy Killea (to the state Senate). After all, their votes made a strong traditionally American statement to both (defeated GOP candidate Assemblywoman) Carol Bentley and Bishop Leo T. Maher.
To Bentley, the voters said: “You may choose for yourself whether or not you would have an abortion, and we respect that. But we will not let you take the freedom to choose away from other women.”
To Bishop Maher, they said: “Your church may tell you that fetal tissue is a human being, and we respect that. But we will not let you impose that belief upon our elected officials.”
The voters of the 39th District chose to uphold principles of freedom over party loyalty and narrow religious dogma. I salute them.
