A Chinese jumbo jet bound for New York was hijacked today with 223 people on board and forced to land in western Japan, authorities said. The Japan Broadcasting Corp. identified the hijackers as a man and woman traveling with a child.

The Boeing 747 landed at Fukuoka, 560 miles southwest of Tokyo on Japan’s westernmost main island of Kyushu, after South Korea earlier refused it permission to land, officials there said. South Korea and China have no diplomatic relations and there are no commercial flights between the two nations.

Authorities did not say how the aircraft was hijacked or give the nationalities of the hijackers. There were no reports of injuries.

Other reports said three persons were taken into custody.

The flight was scheduled to leave Beijing at 10 a.m. local time and stop at Shanghai before going on to New York. It was hijacked after the Shanghai stop.
