Assault in the Dark

Share

As students and workers at the UCI School of Medicine, we are deeply distressed by the violent attack and rape of a woman that occurred in the medical school parking lot.

Although we appreciate the fact that the university is attempting to provide a safer environment for its students, we feel that we must point out that none of these safety measures have been extended to our part of the campus. Our student parking lot (where the incident took place) has no lighting. None of the recently installed emergency phones were placed on our part of the campus.

Despite repeated requests for improved lighting and parking safety, the university has obviously failed to include all areas of the campus. It is clear that the administration’s claim of a “safe environment” (Dec.8) ignores these facts.

As medical students who spend late hours on the most remote part of campus, we want to bring these omissions to the public’s attention so that future tragedy may be prevented.
