Uwe-Jens Mey of East Germany swept the sprint events at a World Cup speed skating meet at Seoul, taking advantage of an illness that swept the U.S. team to beat Dan Jansen in the 500 meters.

Mey won the 500 in 37.18 seconds. Jansen, former world sprint speed skating champion, was second in 37.39, and Igor Zhelezovski of the Soviet Union was third in 37.76.

Mey won the 1,000 meters in 1:15.81, followed by Zhelezovski in 1:15.93 and Andrei Bakhvalov of the Soviet Union in 1:16.59. Jansen was seventh in 1:17.93.

Angela Hauck of East Germany swept the women’s events. She won the 500 in 40.80, followed by Bonnie Blair in 41.15. Hauck won the 1,000 meters in 1:23.68. Seiko Hashimoto of Japan was second in 1:24.69. Blair was fifth in 1:25.47.
