P. M. BRIEFING : Ford, VW Plan to Build New Car

WOLFSBURG, West Germany —
Volkswagen AG confirmed today that it is in talks with Ford Motor Co. about jointly developing and producing a new car.
“Details have not been agreed yet,” said a VW spokesman, confirming a report on the plans in today’s edition of the news magazine Der Spiegel made available on Saturday.
The magazine said the car would be produced starting in 1993. Output would total 200,000 a year, with half being sold as VWs and half as Fords. The production plant would operate in Spain, Portugal, Britain or Italy.
