FULLERTON : Council to Consider Fireworks Display

Share

The City Council tonight will consider whether to hold a public fireworks display next Fourth of July to give residents an alternative to family fireworks.

A public show would cost the city $50,600, city officials estimate.

The idea for a public fireworks display came up in October when council members discussed banning the sale and use of fireworks, as most cities in Orange County have done.

Although the council voted 3 to 2 to keep fireworks, it asked staff members to gather information and cost estimates on a public display. The council will consider the report during its 4 p.m. session.

Until about 1975, the firefighters’ association sponsored a public fireworks show at Fullerton High School’s old gymnasium, City Manager William C. Winter said. The shows ended when the building was replaced.

The city’s last public fireworks show was held in 1987 to celebrate Fullerton’s centennial.
