Prime Minister Herbert Blaize, who won election after the U.S. invasion in 1983, died early today at his official residence, Governor General Paul Scoon announced. He was 71.

Blaize had been suffering for years from cancer of the prostate and had made regular, annual visits to Walter Reed General Hospital in Washington for radiation treatment.

He died at his official residence just after 9 a.m., Scoon said. He had been working from an office in his residence for about a year because of his illness.

Following the Reagan Administration-backed military intervention in 1983, Blaize and two other leaders of moderate political parties formed the coalition New National party and won elections in 1984. The United States intervened in Grenada after the government of Marxist Prime Minister Maurice Bishop was overthrown by a military coup.
