CALIFORNIA IN BRIEF : FRONTERA : Killer Susan Atkins Fails in Parole Bid

Share
From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Susan Atkins, a follower of Charles Manson who admitted stabbing actress Sharon Tate to death in 1969, was denied parole for the eighth time. A three-member Board of Prison Terms panel decided after a four-hour hearing at the California Institution for Women that the 41-year-old convict will be eligible for another hearing in three years. She is serving a life term. The panel said that Atkins, known in the Manson cult as Sadie Mae Glutz, is still a danger to society, based on psychiatric reports and the brutal nature of her crimes. Hearing officers noted that Atkins had failed to complete job training in prison as a data processor, and had refused recommended psychiatric tests and participation in rehabilitation programs for addicts of alcohol and drugs. No member of the Manson sex and drug cult convicted in the slayings has been paroled.
