WORLD : Czech Communists Dismantle Its Hated Private Army Force
The Communist Party today dissolved its 120,000-member private army and expelled or suspended former top officials associated with the 1968 Warsaw Pact invasion and the repressive period that followed.
Delegates to an emergency party congress, which earlier elected former Prime Minister Ladislav Adamec to the new position of chairman, adopted a program calling for creation of a lawful and just society with free elections and a multi-party system.
The hated Workers’ Militia, which aided in the Communist takeover of power in Czechoslovakia in February, 1948, was disarmed two weeks ago when army trucks retrieved weapons from factories and transported them to army warehouses.
