Beverly Hills : 2 to Lead Parcel Tax Drive

Share

Two community leaders have been named by the Beverly Hills school board to lead the campaign for the passage of a parcel tax in June, 1990.

Snooky Goldman, chairwoman of the opening and closing ceremonies of the city’s Diamond Jubilee this year, will oversee fund-raising for the campaign. Lawyer Bernard Nebenzahl will coordinate planning for the election.

All expenses for the parcel-tax drive must be raised by the campaign committee.

Goldman has helped in school bond and tax elections, and her three children attended Beverly Hills schools. She is founding president of the William O. Douglas Outdoor Classroom in Franklin Canyon, north of Beverly Hills, which leads hikes for inner-city children and the general public.

Nebenzahl was chairman of the school board’s Citizens Advisory Committee for a Balanced Budget in 1984-85 and has a daughter at Beverly Hills High School. He has been on the board of directors of the Beverly Hills Bar Assn.

The tax on all parcels of land in the city must be approved by two-thirds of the voters.

A spokeswoman for the district said the amount of the proposed tax and the length of time it would be collected will be determined by the school board in January.

The tax is a key element of the recent settlement reached with Beverly Hills teachers. If the tax passes, teachers will get a 3% increase built into their salary schedule in 1990-91 and will not face any increase in teaching minutes.
