FULLERTON : Plan for Dam Area Recreation Is OKd
The city has approved a plan that will allow more of the 220 acres near the Brea Dam to be used for recreational purposes.
Fullerton leases the land from the federal government, and 128 acres are already being used for recreation. Under the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers plan approved by the council this week, 92 more acres will be developed for such uses as picnic areas and campgrounds.
On the other 128 acres are the Fullerton Golf Course, a nine-court tennis center, a YMCA recreation center and a children’s center run by the Children’s League of Fullerton.
The dam and reservoir occupy another 299 acres. Most of that area is set aside as a preserve for plants and animals, and it already has a number of nature trails.
The small dam was built in 1942 and is owned by the federal government. It and the reservoir behind it are usually dry, but they do hold water during heavy rains. The dam is off the east side of Harbor Boulevard and south of Bastanchury Road.
