The British Union Jack was raised in Argentina today for the first time officially since the 1982 Falklands war after the two former foes reopened their consulates in London and Buenos Aires.

Argentina and Britain broke formal ties after the war but in October agreed to resume consular relations and to lift remaining restrictions on bilateral trade, finance and transportation.

In a private ceremony attended by British and Argentine staff, British General Consul Alan Hunt hoisted the flag in the consulate’s garden. Hunt then opened the doors to the public.

British and Argentine delegations are due to hold talks in February on the possibility of restoring full diplomatic links.
