WOMEN’S BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Tennessee Defeats Trojans, 87-55

Tennessee guard Dena Head scored 24 points, making 11 of 14 shots, to lead the No. 4-ranked Volunteers over USC, 87-55, in a women’s basketball game Friday night at the Lyon Center.

Tennessee took an early lead, 18-8, but Kim Gessig scored four points in a rally that gave the Trojans a 25-23 edge with five minutes to go in the first half.

The Trojan lead was short-lived as Tennessee took a 36-27 halftime advantage. Daedra Charles had four of her 13 points during Tennessee’s 8-2 run to start the second half.

Guard Tammy Story led USC (2-2) with 18 points. Tennessee, which finished with a 2-2 record on its California trip, is 7-3.

Notre Dame 61, UCLA 60--Notre Dame’s Margaret Nowlin made two free throws with 18 seconds left to give the Fighting Irish a 61-57 lead at South Bend, Ind. The Bruins could only answer with Nicole Henderson’s three-point shot at the buzzer in a game that had six lead changes.

Notre Dame went on an 11-4 run for a 55-47 lead with 4:22 to play, only to see UCLA battle back to tie, 57-57, at 1:29.
